Maritime localization traditionally relies on cooperative systems such as the Automatic Identification System (AIS), where vessels actively transmit their positions. However, AIS spoofing, i.e., the intentional falsification of transmitted coordinates, undermines the reliability of these approaches. This seminar investigates Time of Arrival (TOA)-based passive localization as an independent physical-layer solution for vessel position verification.

A key challenge in this scenario is the presence of anunknown timing offset that is common to all receiving base stations (BSs) for each AIS transmission, resulting from transmitter delays, protocol timing references, and receiver processing latencies. To address this issue, the localization problem is formulated by explicitly incorporating the unknown temporal bias into the measurement model. Several estimation strategies, either iterative or non-iterative, are then investigated and designed, including Maximum Likelihood (ML), Least-Squares (LS), and constrained formulations, to solve the resulting nonlinear problem.

Experimental validation using real AIS datasets shows that the considered approaches enable accurate passive vessel localization using existing AIS infrastructures. In particular, the proposed methods provide a favorable trade-off between estimation accuracy and computational complexity, while satisfying the requirements for real-time applicability.

七、主讲人简介:

Antonio De Maio was born in Sorrento, Italy, on June 20, 1974. He received the Dr.Eng. degree with honors and the Ph.D. degree in information engineering, both from the University of Naples Federico II, Naples, Italy, in 1998 and 2002, respectively. He is currently a Professor with the University of Naples Federico II.

His research interests lie in the field of statistical signal processing, with emphasis on radar detection and optimization theory applied to radar signal processing. Professor De Maio is an IEEE Fellow and the recipient of the 2010 IEEE Fred Nathanson Memorial Award, with the citation for “robust CFAR detection, knowledge-based radar signal processing, and waveform design and diversity”. He also received the 2024 IEEE Warren D. White Award. He has served as an IEEE AESS Distinguished Lecturer and has been actively involved in IEEE AESS committees and editorial activities, including serving as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Radar Systems.
