Author:| Time: 2023-04-20 09:04:36|

Topic: Recent advances in ultra-wideband optical communications enabled by Raman amplification

Speaker: Dr. Mingming Tan

Time: 10:30-11:30 (Thursday), April 20, 2023

Venue: Research Building Block, B253

Host: Associate Professor Wen Feng

Content:

We review different designs of Raman amplifiers which have been proposed to broaden the transmission window of single mode optical fibre beyond the conventional C+L band. We demonstrate various amplifier structures to suppress the crucial Raman pump-to-pump interactions and reduce the noise figures in short-wavelength bands. Furthermore, we show optical fibre transmission results covering up to 210nm bandwidth over E, S, C and L band.

Speakers’ profiles:

Dr Mingming Tan is a Research Fellow (permanent) at Aston Institute of Photonic Technologies (AiPT), Aston University, Birmingham, UK. He has published over 100 papers in leading journals and international conferences in the field of optical fibre communications. He is currently engaged in research targeting ultra-wideband amplification using advanced Raman amplification structures, extending reach via optical phase conjugation to combat fibre nonlinearity, and long-haul/unrepeated transmissions using high-speed optical transceivers. He is the Principal Investigator of two Royal Society International Exchange Grant and a Researcher-Co-Investigator of an EPSRC Grant. He has served as subcommittee chair, co-chair, and TPC member in several international conferences (ACP, IEEE-SUM, PIERS, ICTON, TOP).
