Topic 1

I will report on  our group's recent results on three research streams: epsilon-near-zero physics,  quantum optics in the infrared, and filamentation in air.

Epsilon-near-zero  materials are an attractive platform to deliver nonlinear effects at a  sub-wavelength scale, with potential applications in ultrafast computing and  light manipulation. We will report on our studies on the origin of the enhanced  non-linear effects in strongly coupled ENZ-plasmonic  systems.

Quantum optics in the 2um  region may impact free-space and guided quantum communication and metrology. We  will report on our studies on quantum states generation, transport and detection  in this spectral region. At longer wavelengths, quantum optics may deliver  enhanced detection capabilities. We will present ongoing efforts that may enable  quantum metrology to enhance the sensitivity of mid and far-infrared  detection.

Finally, we will discuss  recent results on laser filamentation in air at high repetition rates, where  cumulative effects play a significant role.

Topic 2

The invention of  optical frequency combs, which was celebrated by the 2005 Nobel prize in  Physics, has made great impacts on precision metrology, optical clockwork,  molecular fingerprinting, amongst others. Recent advances in high finesse  Kerr-active micro-cavity have provided a promising platform for study of cavity  nonlinear dynamics and offered a reliable route towards the vision of chip-scale  ultrashort pulses and frequency combs. Chip-scale optical frequency comb will  become more instrumental in areas where compact footprint, low power  consumption, large comb spacing, and access to unconventional spectral region  are essential. In this talk, I will present our recent results on: i). the  generation of Kerr soliton microcombs with ultra-low time jitter, and ii). using  ultra-low phase noise Kerr combs for coherent data communications.

Dr Clerici is  Professor of Photonics and leads the Ultrafast Nonlinear Optics group (UNO) at  the University of Glasgow, a team of one post-doctoral researcher and six PhD  students. The group research mainly focuses on quantum optics in the visible and  infrared spectral region, THz photonics and epsilon-near-zero physics. Dr  Clerici is the author of ~70 publications, ~60 invited talks, and >130  conference contributions. He obtained an MSc in Physics in 2006 and a PhD in  Physics in 2010 at the University of Insubria. He was FQRNT Fellow (2011-2012)  and Marie Curie Fellow (2012-2015) at the INRS-EMT in Canada and Heriot-Watt  University in the UK. He was then a Lecturer (2015-2019), Senior Lecturer  (2019-2022) and Professor (2022) at the University of Glasgow. Clerici was the  recipient of the 2014 Sergio Panizza award from the Italian Physical Society for  his contribution to THz photonics.

Dr. Heng Zhou is  now an Associated Professor at  School of Information and Communication  Engineering, UESTC. His researches focus on Nonlinear Optics, Ultrafast Optics,  and Optical Communications, with 50+ publications on Nat. Comms, Light: Sci.  &App, Phys. Rev. Lett, etc. His innovations, including technique for Kerr  soliton microcombs generation circumventing cavity thermal effect, and  coherence-cloning frequency combs over long fiber link for coherent  transmission, are now widely used both in academic research and industry  applications.
