讲座题目:Thin films – the key for enhancing functionality of optical fiber sensors
主讲人:Prof. Mateusz Śmietana,Head of the Group for Nanocoated Optical Fibre Sensors (NOFS) ,Warsaw University of Technology (Poland)
Abstract:
Optical fibres are small, flexible, low-cost and immune to external electromagnetic fields, which are often present during medical examinations e.g., in hospitals. After certain modification the fibres can be used as sensors, where light guided in the fibre interacts with external medium and thus can be used for monitoring optical properties in vicinity of the sensor surface. The interaction with external medium can be greatly modified by deposition of thin (typically less than 300 nm in thickness) overlays and nanostructures.
In this seminar will be presented vapour-based nanocoating deposition methods and materials that can be used to modify properties of various optical fiber sensors. A special attention will be paid to nanocoated sensors and label-free biosensors based on long-period fibre gratings, various interferometers, and lossy-mode resonance devices. A subjective review of the most promising optical-fibre-based biosensing devices will be shown when they are targeted towards biomolecules of different size, i.e., DNA, proteins, viruses, and bacteria.

Mateusz Smietana received his B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D. (with distinctions), and D.Sc. in field Electronics from the Warsaw University of Technology (WUT), Poland, in 2000, 2002, 2007, and 2014, respectively. Since March 2006 he has been working in the Institute of Microelectronics and Optoelectronics (IMiO), WUT. Since December 2015 he has been an Associate Professor at WUT. He was a postdoctoral fellow in Virginia Tech (USA, 2007) and Université du Québec en Outaouais (Canada, 2009-2011), and scholar at Stanford University (USA, 2011) within Polish TOP500 Innovators Program. He received scholarships from various Canadian and European institutions, including scholarship for outstanding young scientist by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (Poland, 2011). He was a leader and principle investigator in over 15 research projects. He has co-authored more than 100 journal and conference papers, several book chapters and a patent. He received more than 10 scientific awards including those at international invention shows and exhibitions (2 gold medals at IWIS 2009 and 2010). He serves as an Associate Editor for 2 JCR journals, and reviewer for over 30 journals and granting agencies. He supervised over 30 students at all levels of education. His know-how on optical fiber biosensing has already been transferred to industry.
